Warsan Shire, heard of her? If not, definitely make that change. I found her via Pinterest – and after reading through every available piece of work, I’ve decided I have a new favorite poet. She discusses love, life, relationships, family, feminism, society, politics, pain, and much more. One of the most important parts of poetry is that it is all about the reader. We each may read something different in a poem. What makes a poet great is the ability to produce catharsis; the ability to bring about deep emotions, and therefore, perhaps, work through them. Warsan Shire does this for me. I can relate to her words throughout many life experiences. Each one means something different to me. However, they all share a deeper meaning, of gender expectations and breaking the mold.
Please enjoy this:
you are a horse running alone
and he tries to tame you
compares you to an impossible highway
to a burning house
says you are blinding him
that he could never leave you
want anything but you
you dizzy him, you are unbearable
every woman before or after you
is doused in your name
you fill his mouth
his teeth ache with memory of taste
his body just a long shadow seeking yours
but you are always too intense
frightening in the way you want him
unashamed and sacrificial
he tells you that no man can live up to the one who
lives in your head
and you tried to change didn’t you?
closed your mouth more
tried to be softer
less volatile, less awake
but even when sleeping you could feel
him traveling away from you in his dreams
so what did you want to do love
split his head open?
you can’t make homes out of human beings
someone should have already told you that
and if he wants to leave
then let him leave
you are terrifying
and strange and beautiful
something not everyone knows how to love.
The idea of light, purity, and cleansing has been on my mind a lot lately. I will be starting a liver, gallbladder, and bowel cleanse in early October. I hope this will bring back my motivation to do a lot with my life. I’ve been slightly stagnant lately. I went to Chicago for a music festival and it reignited my desire to travel. I’ve been doing a lot of weekend trips – with a few more in store this fall – and I’ve been working on categorizing and documenting these so I can make a blog about it – I’ll keep you posted as that comes along. In the mean time, I’m making plans to move out to Sun Valley, ID. Once my contract for work is up, I will pack up and move into the mountains. In a few short months, this will be my daily view:
I‘ve been going to this town since I was 6 months old. I’ve always considered it a home-away-from-home, and yet, I’m ready to make it my home. I may go for 3 months. I may stay forever. I really don’t know. Life isn’t about knowing but it is about going. Connect with your soul, every day. Life is about this connection more than anything else. Do what makes you happy. What if you don’t know? Explore. Explore every day. Open your heart to experiences. Let love flow in and through your body.
I’m getting new tattoos in the upcoming weeks. Some on my fingers. Why? Because I believe that if we are proud of something, we show it to the world. We don’t hide who we are, regardless of who we may offend. I’m getting alchemy symbols tattooed on my fingers. The four elements and a few symbols that I will keep discreet until they have been permanently drawn on my body. Your body is a temple. Your skin is your canvas. Cover it with beauty. Uncover it to love.
Love yourself and others ❤
